Ds And Dsi Cards – Compatibility With New Nintendo Dsi Xl / Ll Console
There are an awful lot of Nintendo DS cards out on the market, some of which are better than others. This article is not meant to promote any card over another, but rather to explain which are compatible with all the different kinds of Nintendo DS console out there.
A quick list of the cards on the market that have been tested by us are below. Clones/fake cards are noted as such, although we tested those anyway.
R4v2 (the original R4 card)
CycloDS
Firecard
EDGE DS
R4 SDHC
R4v3 – Fake (Clone of R4v2)
R4 Ultra – Fake (Clone of R4v2)
M3 DS Real
M3 DS Simply
DSTT
R4i SDHC
R4i Ultra – Fake (Clone of R4i SDHC)
R4i RTS – Fake (Clone of R4i SDHC)
iEDGE
M3i Zero
EZFlash Vi
Acekard 2i
There is good news here for users of the original Nintendo DS, otherwise known as the Nintendo DS Phat. Every card tested above works with the latest kernel on the Nintendo DS. However, be warned that the R4v2 is no longer supported by the original R4 team so newer games may not work with that card.
A similar test also showed the Nintendo DS Lite working with every card that worked with the Nintendo DS Phat, so users of the newer DS Lite console are also all right.
However, it is when the Nintendo DSi is brought out that noticable differences occur. Only certain cards actually work with the Nintendo DSi, which are listed below.
R4i SDHC
iEDGE
M3i Zero
EZFlash Vi
Acekard 2i
The R4i Ultra also worked sporadically but seemed to be error prone compared to the rest, with regular black screens greeting the user when the unit was turned on. For this reason, while it technically would work with the Nintendo DSi, it is not included in the recommended cards list.
All of the above cards that worked with the Nintendo DSi were further tested on the new Nintendo DSi XL console, knowin in Japan as the Nintendo DSi LL. All of the DSi compatible cards also worked on the Nintendo DSi XL with one exception – the EZFlash Vi.
It appears that the EZFlash Vi has had several hardware revisions since it has been released. We contacted the EZFlash Vi team about this and were told that an old model, the “model 705″, will not work on the new DSi XL console. All EZFlash Vi cards made at present, however, are of the newer “model 805″ which should work on all DSi consoles.
Hopefully, this article has been helpful to those who are looking to choose a Nintendo DS or DSi card for their newest console.
